What Do I Do With All My Stuff? A Downsizer’s Guide to Letting Go

If you’ve lived in your home for decades, you’ve accumulated a lifetime of stuff—and stories.
Facing it all at once can feel overwhelming.
But here’s what I tell every downsizing client: you don’t have to do it all in a weekend. You just need a system.
Start with four categories:
-
Keep – Things that still serve you daily
-
Donate – Gently used items that someone else could love
-
Give to Family – Heirlooms with emotional value
-
Let Go – Items that no longer serve your life
The process will stir up memories. That’s okay. Take your time.
And if you’re stuck, bring in help—friends, family, or even a professional organizer.
The point isn’t to purge—it’s to prioritize.
This is about creating space for your next chapter, not erasing the past.
